Last Exit To Brooklyn - DVD cover

Last Exit To Brooklyn

Taken from Hubert Selby, Jr.’s controversial novel. A gallery of characters in Brooklyn in the 1950s are crushed by their surroundings and selves. This is the end of the line for a group of desperate and lonely people looking for love and finding only sex and violence. What makes this brutal and dark film so watchable are the understated tour de force performances. Among the tragic lost souls: Lang plays Harry, an unhappily married man who refuses to admit he is a homosexual - until he falls in love with another man (Zete) who, unfortunately is an affected self centered “fag” who is only using Harry until something better comes along; a family’s inability to cope with their daughter’s (Lake) illegitimate pregnancy; Georgette (Arquette) is a self-hating drag queen with a tragic crush on Vinnie (Dobson), the local macho hood. Vinnie and his buddies (including Rockwell, Andrews, Baldwin) torment Georgette all the while using him and his friends for sex and drugs; Tralala (Leigh) is the most tragic of all - a hooker who, in an effort to forget a love that could never be, allows all of the men in a bar to have sex with her,one after the other. Courtney Love auditioned for the central lead female role of Tralala which was in the end cast with actress Jennifer Jason Leigh (after Patricia Arquette had to drop out)
